Jared kept running and running and running until he realized that no one was following him anymore. At that moment, he hid in an alley, knelt down, and began to cry. This was the first time that this had ever happened to him, but he didn't question the nature of the water flowing down his face, he just cried. After what must have been at least ten minutes, Jared began to calm down. With some confusion regarding his tears, the man looked around. The alley was covered in the same red stuff that exploded on Jenny.

Aside from the red that covered the walls, and the circumstances which brought him to those walls, Jared might have thought that nothing was wrong.

At least until a voice blared over the city P.A.

"To all citizens of New Sovil, please remain indoors as the terrorist threat is dealt with. Remain calm and proceed with your day as usual. The Director will ensure all of our safety."

Jared could only hope that what he had heard was true.

Waking up was always troublesome for Subject 91. S91 started every session with a sharp pain at the base of the back of it's skull. This annoyed it greatly, but it was a normal sensation to have. S91 was to graduate today; into what wasn't clear, but this made it happy. Now was to begin an endless round of questioning and hopefully some more treats.

In a room at another location...

"Sir..."

"Yes?"

"It's time to move on to Subject Nine-One."

"Already?.. Hopefully this one will be better than the last."

"Expectations are positive among the staff, sir."

The assistant and his superior paused for a moment as the phone rang. The caller ID read "Prop. Dept."

The superior pressed the button to answer the call and said, "What is it Jenny?"

Jenny answered, "The 'eavesdroppers' have been silenced sir."

The superior kept a blank expression as he replied, "Thank you. Return to work now."

"Yes sir," Jenny ended with the distinct click that the receiver made when the line was broken.

The two men remained silent as the superior let a quick smirk escape his grasp and die away.

"Open a line to Subject Nine-One and do not allow me to be interrupted."

"Yes sir," the assistant answered.

As his assistant left the room, the superior pressed a few buttons on his desk and faced a large screen.

By far, the worst moments for S91 were the ones spent waiting. The time between waking up and actually starting in particular, was unbearable. There was one positive to come from this however, and that was that S91 was able to think during this time.

It looked around.

S91 was floating inside a semi-gelatinous fluid, which was contained by an egg-shaped life support system. Many wires and tubes were connecting S91 to its habitat sustaining pod.

Then a screen began to descend in front of the pod, with the pod's clear front side allowing the subject to view it. As it came to life, S91 forgot about what the room looked like or what itself looked like. This always occurred at the same time, and S91 never remembered to look at itself or the room before examining the pod.

A bald man's face appeared on screen.

"Hello subject" He started, "It's time to begin."

There was a small pause.

"You must now graduate into your final product. Are you ready?"

The subject spoke, "Yes, I am ready."

The face turned to the left and a small click was heard. Suddenly, a second cover slid over the pod, and S91 had no sensory perception whatsoever. After a brief moment, another button was pressed, and the process began.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jenny sat quietly in her chair. It was a small chair, but it was still larger than her peers' chairs. It was made from nicer materials as well. Instead of hard plastic, like the rest of the Propaganda Department, her's was made of a material that could be compared to that of a child's school pack, except with small cushions. All of their chairs were on a swivel, but hers also had a back to it. Considering that most members of this department worked eight hours a day every day, the back on her chair was a blessing.

The rest of the department was visible in front of her, typing away on their touchboards. They all worked diligently but it was a sort of detached diligence, the kind that one gets when one hasn't slept for an hour but is still expected to file a report on the condition of an entire country. They weren't tired though, far from it in fact. If you were to set foot inside of this office, filled with small desks and low-set cubicles, you would quickly detect the vibrant hum of energy inside. You might even notice that each worker's eyes were alert when compared to the sodden nature of the shells that would be called bodies. It would be hard to understand for an outsider, but Jenny knew perfectly well. Although their bodies were tired, each worker carried a sense of pride into their work. This was an occupation which was considered important by the government, and as such, it was considered important by the people.

Every day they came in like a horde of undead and punched their cards in. Every day they tracked down threats hidden within the city, people who would cause the populace harm in some way. They believed that they were protecting New Sovil from the possible threat of The Empire, spies who would destroy them from within. Every day at four hours time they would receive their apportioned meal and 15-minute rest. Then they would return home at the end of the eighth hour. Of course they never stayed home, because their was always a pride convention or a freedom parade to attend.

This was the time that she enjoyed the most, when she didn't have any current projects and new orders hadn't come through yet. Often, this time was over only a moment after it had began, so Jenny learned to cherish it. She leaned back ever so slightly, closed her eyes, and waited.

"Today the Empire lost 97 clicks of ground during the conflict of the bulge. 324 prisoners were rescued from Essowary, the latest expiration center to be found by our troops. Striking photos have been sent back to us so that we may share them in an attempt to convey the horror of the Empire."

Many pictures of a quarry were shown, one by one. Each photo showed an even more grotesque display than the last. Malnutritioned children, paralyzed elders, and diseased animals littered the place, but the worst of all was that each dead body had a ludicrous smile on its face.

"We will return momentarily. This has been GNN, your only source for quality news."

In a very abrupt manner, the old man sitting in the chair raised his fist and yelled, "Those BASTARDS! How can they let their leaders do that? It's inhuman, it's immoral, it's-"

"Dad, be quiet" Jenny interrupted, "You'll wake up the whole complex."

Dad lowered his fist and looked over the back of his stained leather chair, "I'm sorry sweet pea, but every time I see the Empire doing something like this I, I..." He was at a loss for words.

Jenny crouched next to her dad's armchair and looked into his green eyes. She was about to say something, but then she saw his right eye again. It was maroon where it was supposed to be white, there was a black slash crossing diagonally across his pupil, and there was no color where the green should've been.

"I know dad" She started, "How about I cook you up a snack to calm you down."

"Suuuure" He grinned, "make me even fatter!"

They laughed and Jenny got up to move to the stove where she turned on a small light above the appliance.

She set a pot of ramen on the stove and turned it on high.

Jenny waited for the pot to boil. Her raven-black hair flowed over her milky skin, which was covered by white casual-wear. Her hazel eyes drifted as she thought about Dad and his life. She thought about her mother's death, her father's drafting, and her subsequent years in the orphanage. Most of all, however, she thought of the slash across her father's eye. The war was fought with deep trenches, crawlers, and long distance laser weaponry. Her dad was a bug rider, which meant he operated a crawler. Crawlers were low set, omnidirectionally treaded, armored vehicles that were operated by a single occupant. They were called crawlers because they looked like pill-bugs with gun barrels instead of antennae. The strange part was that her dad apparently received the slash from a knife, but crawlers are near impossible to board and there was no scar running across his face.

She returned to her dad and gave him one of the two bowls of ramen she had.

"Thank you sweet pea," he took his bowl.

"You're welcome dad."

The wall was finished with advertisements and began to play a PSA.

"Remember, citizens of New Sovil, the Empire is always hunting for wanderers outside of the city. For your own safety, only use designated railways for intercity travel."

The news came back on.

"Hello citizens, this is GNN. A breaking story has just made its way to our offices. Four suicide bombers have attacked the recently re-constructed Freedom Spire. Crime-alert cameras show them speeding into the four support tether's bases on hovercycles and detonating themselves."

Then the wall changed from a bald man speaking, to clear footage of the men at many different angles, speeding at the tether supports and exploding in golden splashes. Every camera was knocked out of place by the resulting shockwave, even one that was only able to see the explosion itself and not the men.

"EP and police have identified the explosion to be caused by antimatter. This gives inspectors firm evidence that this must have been caused by the Empire as only the Empire and our most recent advances in technology have been able to produce antimatter in large quantities."

Jenny was now leaning on Dad's chair, staring coldly at the wall's images.

Dad looked up to her, "I love you."

She looked down, "I love you too."

Then they hugged, only illuminated by the wall screen.

A tear ran down the old man's face from his bad, right eye and dropped into his ramen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Finally, I have access to the laptop again. Also, I want to clarify that this story has nothing to do with the clan or Star Wars despite use of words like "Empire" and "Propaganda Department"]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Subject Nine-One..." a familiar voice called, "Subject Nine-One, are you conscious?"

S91 felt strange; he felt... larger. This would be a good thing if it was true, since it lost body mass during the last two graduations, but this time felt more odd than was usual.

"What are these appendages attached to me?" it thought.

The voice spoke again, "You are supposed to be awake right now, please speak."

The newly transformed subject didn't really hear these words, it more or less saw them floating in front of its blurred vision ever so daintily.

"Well, I suppose this one is another failure, terminate subject."

"But sir," another voice interjected, "his brain waves show that he is having conscious thought and may have functioning motor skills."

The first voice continued, "Yes, but we have been testing him for sixteen days now. We are already overdue for its termination."

"Sir, the staff believes that this subject is the success we've been looking for."

"Yes, and the Emperor believes that expending anymore resources on this... thing would be a waste. Need I remind you, again, that we are SIX days overdue, and the screening committee will be here in ONE hour?"

"Wow!" S91 thought, "I can control these appendages!" It heard more arguing about something that was apparently supposed to be dead. "I hope it wakes up soon..."

"Listen," The suddenly recognizable and sincere bald man's voice said, "I understand that it must be hard, but the Emperor does not take lightly to disobedience, we could be deported, or worse."

The second voice stayed silent.

"Maybe S92 will be more successful for your team?" His voice even more sincere.

They were both silent for a moment.

"I suppose... that it won't matter if I'm fired anyway, so... whatever go ahead and terminate him."

"That man sounds sad," S91 thought, "He must care deeply about this thing." It wriggled its appendage a bit. "Oh Wow! These appendages have more appendages on them! What am I?"

The bald man walked over to his desk and opened a command prompt on his screen. He was about to execute the fatal directive, but instead, he flicked back to S91 and took one last look. S91 then wriggled his arm and its respective fingers.

The bald man then quickly went to activate the comm, only to realize that it had still been on.

"Subject Nine-One, please speak to me."

"Hello."

There was a cheer.

"There is much to explain now subject."
